NotesNews: 28 Apr: Dr Kissinger, the United States Secretary of State, delivered a message of
commitment and cooperation to the nations of Africa in which he set out American policy on the
continent's three most explosive issues, Rhodesia, Namibia and South Africa. He called for common
action to achieve the goals of national independence, economic development and racial justice. He
emphasised that while the United States would provide assistance, Africa's destiny remained in
Africa's hands. This part of his speech was seen as a warning to the Soviet Union whose recent
successes in Angola were thought to be behind America's support for Africa. News: 30 Apr: Henry
Kissinger's tour of Africa came to a halt as he went down with mild gastroenteritis after a night
of revelry which included three hours of native dancing.
