NotesNews: "George Osborne has told Conservative MPs that David Cameron acted as a restraining influence on him as he tried to cut the 50p upper rate of income tax to 40p in this week's budget. ... " The Guardian

Letters: "The claim that the 50p tax rate failed to result in significant additional tax receipts (Pensioners fund tax cut, 22 March) has been met with much scepticism. But following George Osborne's claim yesterday that he doesn't pay the 50p top rate of tax, perhaps this is not surprising. While as a cabinet minister his basic salary of 134,565 pounds per year is under the 150,000 pound threshold, this does not include the rental income he receives from "residential property in London" or his income from a trust fund owning 15% of the family firm Osborne and Little. On this evidence it is probably better to crack down on those "morally repugnant" tax avoiders to ensure "the richest pay more". If someone with an estimated wealth of over 4m pounds isn't a 50p rate taxpayer, you have to wonder who is. Mike Reed, Manchester" The Guardain
