NotesNews : Labour is preparing to crack the disciplinary whip over potential rebles on the party's new-look national executive committee with a code of conduct designed to stifly policy clashes in the media. In advance of next Tuesday's first seession of the expanded NEC. the party's incoming general secretary, Margaret McDonagh, is seeking to bind committee members to unpresendented rules that would require them to inform the party's press office "before discussing NEC business with the media." Though her draft code of conduct explicitly states it "will not be used to suppress or silence debate on teh NEC" it is bound to be seen as a warning to the four new left wing constituency members. Tony Blair is already embroiled in fresh allegations that staff as Downing Street and the party's headquarters at Millbank are demonstrating "control freak" instinct over candidate selection in Wales, Scotland and the looming contest for Londons mayor.
