NotesNews - Plans to remove the veto from European Union decision on taxes will be tabled at
a new round of EU treaty negotiations, due to be launched in Finland next September. The
move to start the machinery for a swift revamp of the 1997 treaty of Amsterdam, confirmed
by EU officials yesterday, will compound pressure on Britain to fall into line with its EU
partners on common taxation policies and other areas. [Charles Bremner, The Times, 3
December 1998] The 20,000 [pounds] Turner Prize went to Chris Ofili last night, the artist
who uses elephant dung and is said to have been inspired by William Blake, hip-hop music
and Renaissance painters to depict the world of modern black sexuality. [Nigel Reynolds,
The Daily Telegraph, 2 December 1998]
