NotesNews : The current state of the Conservative party is eerily familiar to anyone who
remembers Labour in the mid-1980's. The bitter infighting and irrelevance to the wider
public are reminiscent of the early Kinnock era, when Labour was still battling with
itself. Anyone interested in power can skip the Tory conference - and many businessmen and
lobbyists who flocked to Blackpool will not be in Bournmenouth this week. The next few days
may, however, show how long the Tories look like remaining a party of opposition. [Peter
Riddell, the Times, October 5th 1998] News : The Conservative Party Annual Conference
begins in Bournemouth.
