NotesNews - Robin Cook, the Foreign Secretary, warned Serbia last night that Nato air strikes could be launched next week if it did not quicky obey UN demands to pull its troops out of Kosovo. The massacre of 16 ethnic Albanians has convinced Mr. Cook and Mr. Blair that diplomatic pressure will not be sufficient to bring about a ceasefire in the disputed region. Mr. Cook said he was appalled by the atrocity and was calling an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council today to condemn it. [George Jones, The Daily Telegraph, 1st October 1998]
