NotesNews : Sinn Fein yeserday took the first historic step towards persuading the IRA to dismantle its arsenal of weapons, as the Government pushed its "draconian" anti-terror bill through a reluctant Commons. The appointment of Martin McGuiness, Sinn Fein's chief negotiator, to liase between the IRA and the international body dealing with decommissioning, was another sign of the rollercoaster pace of the Northern Ireland peace process. Mr McGuiness's appointment was welcomed by David Trimble, Northern Ireland's first Minister as " a sensible move in the right direction which is long overdue". [John Mullin and Michael White, The Guardian, September 3 1998] News : The bear hug and the backslap that the American leader [Bill Clinton] received at the Kremlin from President Yeltsin was more in keeping with the "Bill and Boris show" as previous summits between the two men have been nicknamed.
