NotesArtwork not dated, date estimated from news. News : Kenneth Clarke, the Chancellor of the Exchequer, appeared yesterday to modify his opposition to a referundum on a single currency, in the wake of party criticism of his pro-European stance. The Chancellor dropped his previously robust scepticism about a referendum - at least publicly - in favour of a more cautious approach in keeping with the Prime Ministers demand for Cabinet unity. Mr Clarke said it would be "eminently sensible" for the Government to follow the Prime Ministers line by keeping the option open. Last Autumn he said it would be a "very curious way" to run a modern country; "I don' think it is remotely in the offing." Mr Clarke's recent strongly pro-European speech in which he dismissed any suggestion of currency union having a constitutional effect, prompted openly hostile comment fron some Cabinet colleagues.
