NotesArtwork not dated, News : The Government narrowly escaped a traumatic defeat over its European policies in the Commons last night after John Majors studiously ambiguous appeal for support split the Tory Euro-sceptics and drove former Chancellor Norman Lamont into the opposition lobby. When Tony Blairs critical motion was voted on at the end of a six hour debate, Norman Lamont was alone among Conservative MP's in backing Labour and the smaller opposition parties. The "whipless nine" Tory Euro-sceptics divided 5 to 4 between abstention and support for Mr Majors cryptic exposition of the Cabinets fragile line on Europe. Despite Mr Blairs effective taunts against a "defeatist and divided" administration, the outcome was victory for Mr Major by 319 to 314. Both Ulster Unionist parties joined the opposition despite Douglas Hurds last minte attempt to assure them that British sovereignty would not be handed away on a "bilateral issue" to Ireland. [Michael White, the Guardian, 2nd March 1995] News : A new production of Hamlet by William Shakespeare opens at the Hackney Empire, 1/3/1995.
