NotesNews : Ministers who are bogged down in the Conservative Party's trench warfare over Europe were warned yesterday that Britain only has a few months to put together an agreed negotiating strategy for the opening phase of the European Unions conference which will be rewriting the Masstricht Treaty. British diplomats have been told by the French government that the EU summit in Cannes at the end of June may start to shape the agenda for talks which are not due to open officially until next year. This calendar puts pressure on the British Cabinet to resolve its differences over Europe before the real bargaining starts. In the Dutch town of Lieden last September Mr Major delivered a carefully worded speech on the future shape of the European Union which dwelt on his reservations but ruled nothing out. Then in an interview last month with Sir David Frost, the Prme Minister unilaterely redefined the governments position as opposed to any significant changes in the distribution of power in the EU system. That lurch towards a harder line on Europe triggered open warfare in the Cabinet and a fresh burst of analysis in Brussels, Paris, Bonn and elsewhere over Mr Majors chances of survival. [George Brock, the Times, 7th February 1995] News : American and Russian spacecraft last night succesfully completed their first rendezvous in space since the famous 1975 Apollo Soyuz docking at the height of the Cold War. Meeting nearly 250 miles above the northern tip of Japan the space shuttle manouvered close to the Mir space station as the two elated crews cheered, laughed and waved at each other. The meeting was a dress rehersal for what will be this June, the first of 7 actual dockings in preparation for the construction of a new joint space station at the end of thei century.
