NotesNews : MEP's overwhelmingly endorsed the new European Commission after its president, Jacques Santer, gave further assurances that he respected the Parliaments right to playt an important part in European Union decision making. By 416 votes to 103 with 59 abstentions, they authorised Mr Santer's team to begin work in Brussels next week, allowing Jacques Delors to retire. Mr Santer said the occasion was a landmark in establishing new democratic legitimacy for the Commission, whose predecessors were appointed by memeber state governments. It also further bolstered the rule of the EU's elected assembly. [John Carvel, The Guardian, 19th January 1995]
