NotesArtwork not dated, date estimated from news. News : Russia isued a clear threat yesterday to intervene militarily in Chechenia, giving the warring factions in the breakaway republic a 48-hour deadline to disband, disarm and release all prisoners. Issuing the ultimatum, President Boris Yeltsin said yesterday that all hopes the Chechnia would resolve the power struggle on its own were exhausted and that fighting in the Republic threatened "the national security of Russia" of which it was still formally a part. After months of feigning to playt no active part in the was, Russias was forced to change its position as a result of an abortive attempt by opposition forces to seize Grozny, the Republics capital, last weekend. It left at least 70 Russian soldiers prisoner. The captured men, in interviews broadcast yesterday said they were not mercaneries but on a cover Russian mission. Hours later Russian made jets bombed Grozny's airport and a military base, although Russia claimed ignorance of the attack which took place as president Dzhokhar Dudayev was giving a press conference. Later Chechen government officials said two Russian made helicopters and one jet had been downed by Stinger missiles. There was no confirmation of this from Moscow.
