NotesNews : Right wing Cabinet Ministers issued loyalty pledges to John Major last night as a mood of crisis gripped the Conservative Parliamentary party. A senior Tory backbencher told the Prime Minister in the Commons that he would rather lose the Conservative whip than support the European Finance Bill on Monday. Other Euro- rebels refused to back down in the face of what some saw as a spurious Cabinet unity. Michael Portillo, John Redwood and Peter Lilley, the leading Cabinet rightwingers, delivered statements agreeing to the so-called "suicide pact" to go down with Mr Major if the government lost Mondays vote on the bill. It is understood that Mr Portillo, Mr Lilley, Mr Redwood and Jonathon Aitken were spoken to individually by Mr Major, Kenneth Clarke and Michael Howard, the Home Secretary, the day after the Cabinets seven most senior ministers had agreed on the confidence tactic.
