NotesNews : The government yesterday revelled in big improvements in schools GCSE and A-Level performance and claimed publication of league tables had helped to raise standards. Gillian Shepherd, the Education Secretary, said 56% of secondary schools in England had increased the percentage of pupils getting at least five A-C grades at GCSE last summer and that more than a quarter had done so for more than two years running. Nationally 38.3% of pupils gained such grades in 1992, 41.1% in 1993, and 43.4% this year. Miss Shepherd claiming that the third year of national league tables provided a 'treasure trove' of informaion, said the figures should also prompt schools and colleges to review their own targets.
