NotesNews : John Major moved yesterday to strengthen the government and Conservative Party machine with an extersive reshuffle designed to counter a revived Labour threat, bring on new talent in the run up to the General Election and plug the weaknesses that have dogged him for the past two years. Four members of the Cabinet and 12 middle-ranking and junior Ministers were sacked or left the government in a mid-term clearout that appeared last night both to have buttressed the Prime Minister and satisfied a broad cross section of Tory MP's. Mr Major has maintained the political balance of his cabinet by bringing in one leftwinger, one rightwinger and two loyalists from the centre. Across the ranks there were promotions fom all wings of the party. Nine of the twenty two Cabinet jobs ended up in new hands but the top jobs remained unchanged.
