NotesNews : The Prime Minister yesterday gave the governments full backing to the assertion by the Prince of Wales that divorce will not stand in the way of his becoming King. Downing Street moved to remove any speculation about the succession in the wake of the Prince's confession of adultery in Wednseday evenings TV documentary. It said yesterday, "The Prince of Wales is heir to the throne. He remains heir to the throne and when the time comes he will be King". Reaction to the programme has provided a litmus test of the Prince's popularity, which appeared to be stuck at a low ebb despite efforts to present the image of a caring prince.
