NotesNews : President Clinton in Britain for the first time since moving into the White House 17 months ago, yesterday hailed the British - American alliance as 'one of history;s profoundest bonds'. In a solemn speech at a D-Day memorial service at Madingley, near Cambridge, Mr Clinton said "America gave to England an infusion of arms and men...The British gave our troops the feeling that they were not so far from home after all". Earlier John Major had struck a similar theme, saying that the 'absolute brotherhood of the Allied forces had served our countries well over the years." [David Harrison, The Guardian, 5th June 1994]
