NotesNews : Labour and the Liberal Democrats made relentless gains at the expense of the Conservatives as votes in the 1994 European Election piled up in Britain and across the European Union early today. But the owrst national result for the Tories in half a century fell short of triggering a terminal crisis in John Major's premiership. Significantly Labour appeared to be picking up votes directly from non-abstaining Tories in middle class areas. [Michael White, The Guardian, 13th June 1994]
