NotesNews : Britain and Germany were on a collision course last night as the Germans indicated that they would again propose Jean-Luc Dehaene for the presidency of the European Commission, even though he was vetoed by John Major at the Corfu summit meeting. Last night Downing Street said it regarded the British veto as an end to the matter, a point Douglas Hurd had made earlier when he said that Britain was not prepared to be taken for granted or to "roll over" at the behest of Germany or France.
