NotesThe British bobby's wooden truncheon is to be replaced by the US-style side-handled baton. Home Secretary Michael Howard told the Police Confederation here today [18 May 1994] that tests had shown the batons to be effective in warding off violent criminals and merely drawing the batons had a pacifying effect. Howard also told the conference that while the government remained opposed to the general arming of police, more officers on armed response vehicles would openly wear sidearms.
