NotesNews: John Major's senior lieutenants yesterday redoubled their efforts to strangle speculation about a looming Tory leadership contest, amid growing evidence that the past week's uproar is damaging the twin Cabinet priorities of economic recovery and a united European Election campaign. As MP's left Westminster for a 12 day Easter break, which will coincide with fifteen billion pounds worth of tax increases on their constituents, even Michael Portillo and Peter Lilley, pillars of the Thatcherite right threw their weight behind Mr Major's leadership into the next general election. While the Foreign Secretary Douglas Hurd, described the Prime Minister as a matchless negotiator for Britain in Europe. The Chancellor Kenneth Clarke complained that the media was "trying to suggest that people who are close colleagues and friends may have a dispute over the leadership". Insisting that the leadership was a "non-issue", Mr Clarke said, "None of us have any intention of having a dispute over the leadership, and no dispute over the leadership will take place." Even gut loyalists know that events must either turn in Mr Major's favour or he will face some form of definitive challenge to his authority later this year. What inhibits more fastidious right wingers is the thought of burying the hatchet with Michael Heseltine. [Michael White, The Guardian, 1st April 1994]
