News: Chris Pattern yesterday made the fighting remarks many in Hong Kong have been waiting to hear. "I don't think that just because China or some Chinese officials say that after 1997 they may do things which are against Hong Kong's interest, that's a very persuasive argument for us today doing things which would be against Hong Kong's interest. So we are going to continue to work for the long-term interest of Hong Kong." Mr Pattern rejected the idea that Hong Kong is interested only in the pursuit of wealth, and observed that the Buddha image is a sign of religion which "is a call that is made to every man and to every woman and gives life itself hope and purpose". The Governor also observed that religious freedom is the hallmark of civilised communities, where "every human being reflects the majesty of the infinite and the wonder of the unknown". In a combative mood, the Governor later accused the Chinese of "making up the law as they go along". He was commenting on the declaration on Monday [27/12/93] from China's Hong Kong and Macau office that any laws made by the Legislative Council would be null and void. Peking has given a clear signal that if the Tianamen Square pro-democracy protests were repeated, the Chinese army would use the same brutal methods to suppress them. (Jonathon Mirsky, The Times)
