NotesJohn Major declared that he had no intention of being pushed out of office. "I am not about to write my memoirs," he said. There is a job to be done, a job I was elected to do and I propose to go on doing it". His speech earned him an eleven minute standing ovation. Michael Portillo said Mr Major had identified with the instincts of the British people, adding "It was a brilliant, brilliant performance". (Philip Webster, The Times) There has been continuing conflict within the Conservative party, mainly between Lady Thatcher and John Major and their supporters. In her memoirs, Lady Thatcher accused John Major of lacking "political instinct". (Chronicle of the Year 1993) Nigel Benn and Chris Eubank met for the third time in a fight at Old Trafford on Saturday [9/10/93].
