NotesImage 1: See 38258 for published cartoon Process white going brown. John Major visited a meeting at Huntingdon race course yesterday [31st May 1993] held in aid of the charity Mencap. (Tim Bishop, The Times) The threat of a leadership challenge to John Major this autumn was ruled out yesterday but senior backbenchers said they would give Mr Major only another twelve months to improve the governments standing. MPs in the right-wing '92 group who have been most angered by the recent cabinet reshuffle also made clear that both Kenneth Clarke and Michael Howard would be given a year's probation as heirs apparent. (Jill Sherman, The Times)
