NotesProcess white going brown. The Danes said "Yes" to Maastricht today, reversing last years "No" decision by 56.8% to 43.2% in a massive 85.6% turnout of voters. Their decision came as a great relief to the EC and especially to John Major, giving him the impetus to complete Britain's ratification of the treaty. The voting took place calmly, but late tonight (18th May 1993) rioting broke out. Police opened fire on stone-throwing demonstrators to save an injured officer. (Chronicle of the Year 1993)
