Notes46 / p2 / 4 col x 5 1/4" News: In spite of advance Whitehall billing that Mrs Thatcher was about to join President Carter in urging that the Olympic Games be moved from Moscow she did not take a Commons opportunity to say so. ... It remained likely, the sources said, that Britain would follow the US if the Americans were successful in persuading the American athletes not to go. But the government recognized that it had no powers to stop atheletes from going to Moscow and it wanted to avoid empty gestures. [The Times 16/1/80]
