News: 25 Jan: President Nixon disclosed that the United States had been secretly negotiating with the North Vietnamese for the past 30 months for an overall Indo-China settlement. The main feature of Nixon's eight-point proposal was a softening of the requirement for a mutual withdrawal of both American and North Vietnamese troops from South Vietnam.
News: 26 Jan: A Japanese soldier who remained faithful to his orders never to surrender was captured after 28 years of hiding on the Pacific Island of Guam.
