News: 2 April: Lieutenant William Calley was confined to quarters at Fort Benning, Georgia, as the result of President Nixon's intervention in his case. Mr Nixon's decision to release from prison the man who had just been sentenced for the premeditated murder of 22 civilians, was seen as political rather than for legal reasons.
