NotesImage 1: See 17654 for published cartoon. News: 27 April: The launching of China's space satellite caused Russia and America new anxieties about their security. First reactions were that it was likely to increase the pressure in both countries for the development of anti-ballistic missile systems and to make the search for disarmament more difficult. The satellite circled the earth every 114 minutes broadcasting the song "The East is Red". One of the space scientists on the project was Professor Chien Hsueh-shen, a former American Army Air Corps colonel, who worked on the early stages of the US space programme.
