Broadcasting from Radio-Alger, Admiral Darlan asked the chiefs of the French fleet at Toulon to bring their units to North Africa or put them out of the power of the Germans. ... The German High Command announced that as the French naval chiefs at Toulon had "given a solemn declaration that the French warships will defend themselves against any attack from the Anglo-Saxon powers, the Fuhrer and the Duce have given orders to desist from occupying the military zone of Toulon with German and Italian troops".... In Washington, President Roosevelt ordered the Lease-Lend administration to furnish the poeple of French North Africa wth arms, food and clothing (some stores had already arrived in North Africa with the American occupation forces)....
