NotesNews: 1 Jan: Britain went ahead and paid £3.5m to Mr Dom Mintoff as its quarterly rental for the Nato bases despite the Maltese Prime Minister's threat to return it. He demanded 10 per cent more to compensate for the fall in the value of the pound since the agreement was made.
