NotesImage 1: See LSE4885 for published cartoon. While the Moscow Conference remained locked
in a clinch about German and Austrian treaties, Bevin took the opportunity to press his
offer of a year before to extend the Anglo-Russian treaty of alliance to fifty years. The
Soviet Government here personified in Vishinsky, were willing, upon condition Britain
should not join any hostile bloc. The current Moscow attitude implied that this would mean
in effect ditching the US and joining the Soviet bloc. Bevin drew back embarrased. [Caption
