Benjamin Britten is the most prolific of contemporary English composers and has the greatest world reputation. Born at Lowestoft in 1913, by the age of 12 had written ten piano sonatas, six quartets, an oratorio and innumerable songs. Studied at the Royal College of music, London, with Frank Bridge and Harold Samuel. His work ranges from opera to radio films. Best known works are Peter Grimes, The Rape of Lucretia, and The Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra.
