NotesNotes: Brenner pass became the border between Italy and Austria after World War I. It was the principle thoroughfare used by Hitler for military transports to Italy. Mussolini and Hitler became allies in 1936 through the Rome-Berlin Axis. Alliance was renewed through the anti-comintern pact (1937) and the Pact of Steel (1939). However, Mussolini delayed entry into the war until he thought Hitler's victory was assured - June 1940. During this period of undeclared support Hitler kept Mussolini in the dark about his plans.
