NotesNews: June 14: Hitler's much-vaunted "secret
weapon" - pilotless, jet-propelled aircraft capable of 400mph and carrying nearly a ton of high
explosives - was unleashed on the South of England yesterday. Known in Germany as the
vergeltungswaffe - "reprisal weapon" or "V-1" they are being flown from bases in the Pas de
Calais. Already, they have scored direct hits on a church, a convent and a hospital - destroyed
with considerable loss of life. The first of them killed three people when it destroyed a house
in South London. The "buzz bomb" or "doodlebug", as Britons are already calling it, flies at low
altitudes, powered by petrol and compressed air. ... [Chronicle of the 20th Century]
