NotesNews: Mr Churchill's visits to Turkey, Cyprus,
Egypt and North Africa. - Meeting with President Inonu. - Anglo-Turkish Talks at Adana. - Address
to Eighth Army in Tripoli. Visit to Allied G.H.Q. North Africa. - Return to Britain.... The Prime
Minister's visit to Turkey - his first visit to a neutral country since the war - was kept
completely secret, and while he was in conference with President Inonu (to whom he handed a
letter from H.M. the King and a message from President Roosevelt) at Adana, the German
Ambassador, von Papen, was ski-ing near Ankara. At a press conference on Feb. 2 in Ankara, Sir H.
Knatchbull-Hugessen said that the primary object of the Adana meeting was to go farther into the
question of reinforcing Turkish security by supplying her with more materials and equipment and
thus the better enable her to resist German pressure or aggression; after the enemy had been
cleared from North Africa the Casablance decisions might result in an extension of hostilities in
regions close to Turkey, ... He arrived at Paddington on Feb. 7, where he received an
enthusiastic welcome and was met by his family, Cabinet Ministers, Service chiefs, and the
Turkish ambassador. ...[Keesing's Contemporary Archives p.5595]
