French North Africa was announced by the White House in the following statement on Nov. 8:
"United States Army, Navy and Air Forces started landing operations during the hours of
darkness this morning at numerous points on the shores of North Africa. Steps have been
taken to give the French people, by radio and leaflet, early information of landings. These
combined operations were supported by units of the Royal Navy and the R.A.F. Lieut.-Gen.
Dwight Eisenhower, U.S. Army, is C.-in-C. of the Allied forces, which is equipped with
adequate weapons of modern warfare. The landing of the American Army is being assisted by
the British Navy and Air Forces, and will in the immediate future be reinforced by a
considerable number of divisions of the British Army.... [Keesing's Contemporary Archives
p.5445] Nov. 9: ... Middle East: Clearance of the battle area continued, with nearly all
remaining enemy forces well beyond the Libyan frontier, though rearguards continued to
offer some resistance at Sidi Barrani and Sollum; British bombing and stafing continued and

described as "appalling" - starved and tattered, some wearing football boots captured at
Tobruk - continued to come in... Correspondents' despatches said that the Italians were
