Notes: On 4th June 1940 the final British, French and Belgian troops evacuated Dunkirk, in recognition of the imminent fall of France. Germany's strategy of blitzkrieg (lightning war) had already succeeded in capturing Poland (1 Nov 1939), occupying Denmark and Norway (April 1940) and forcing the surrender of the Netherlands (14 May 1940) and Belgium (28 May). He seemed unstoppable.

He gained support for his views on German nationalism, anti-Semitism, anti-capitalism and anti-communism through his impassioned speeches and propaganda. He wanted to establish a New Order of absolute rule in Europe and pursued a policy of seizing land by force for the Aryan people.
