Embedded text or transcript"Oo look, Drake! The Spanish Armada!" "Well, really, I don't think that's quite nice
of them! Signal that if they sink our fleet our good relations with any government they may form
may be seriously imparied."
Person DepictedHalifax; Edward Frederick Lindley Wood (1881-1959); Earl of
Chamberlain; Neville (Arthur Neville) (1869-1940)
Colonel Blimp; (fictional)
Low; David (1891-1963)
NotesNotes : The Nyon Arrangements for patrolling the
main train routes of the West Mediterranean were insufficient to prevent ruthless sinkings of
British Merchant shipping in Spanish waters by Axis air and submarine attacks. France answered
the protests of Chamberlain and Halifax by saying that he could not claim the legal right of a
"belligerent" to blockade, yet he intended to exercise it. The sinkings continued. [p.65, Years
