NotesWhen Hitler became Chancellor of Germany in 1933 he immediately began to re-arm Germany. He
withdrew from the disarmament conference of the League of Nations, and the League, in October
1933 thus clearly indicating his intentions. France, in particular, was concerned about German
re-armament, fearing a strong Germany on her borders. The League failed to deal with German
rearmament, even though Germany was technically still bound by the restrictions imposed by the
Treaty of Versailles in 1919. The League is presented here as hoping that Germany will behave,
without actually doing anything to persuade/coerce her, demonstrating its inefficiency as a
peace-keeping force.
