As new Year dawned, flags were hoisted at Britain's 1,500 collieries. They heralded change of ownership: the pits now belong to the nation. This part of the Government's nationalisation programme ought to have quickened socialist hearbeats most, but not so. ... At Coal Board headquarters in London the cabinet mustered for a handing-over ceremony. Cricket-loving Mr Attlee said: "The National Coal Board is going in to bat on a distinctly sticky wicket".
