Person DepictedRoosevelt; Franklin D. (Franklin Delano) (1882-1945)
Hitler; Adolf (1889-1945)
NotesNews: July 7. American troops took over Iceland to prevent it being occupied by the Germans. Iceland was occupied by Britain early in 1940 to forestall Germany turning it into a base for harassing the vital seaborne trade between Britain and the US. In April, reports that the Nazis were planning an attack helped the President to make up his mind. In June he ordered a Marine brigade of 4,000 men to sail in two weeks. The US marines would release British troops from the 20,000 man garrison and free British shipping.
