Norwegian protest agains U-boat sinkings of neutral shipping
Person DepictedHitler; Adolf (1889-1945)
NotesNews: 17 Feb: Norwegian sailors from HMS Cossack rescue 300 British prisoners from the German ship Altmark.
News: 20 Feb: German U-boat commanders were given orders to attack all neutral shipping as well as Allied vessels, according to information received from Berlin radio. The order affected small neutrals like Holland worst of all, as all her shipping passed through British ports for clearance. Norway, Sweden and Denmark all prepared protests to Berlin. 50 Norwegian ships had been sunk since the beginning of the war - all victims of Nazi U-boat or aircraft strikes. Hitler hoped to force all neutrals to divert their exports from Britain and other overseas markets to Germany.
