Notes | On June 30th after 80 years of Belgian rule the independence of the Congo was declared. Congo's first Prime Minister was former postal clerk Patrice Lumumba. On 6th July Congoese army mutinied against Lumumba and all white settlers. On 8th all white army officers are dismissed. On 11th Congo's richest province, Katanga, declares independence under Moise Tshombe, a three-times bankrupt businessman. Katanga like the rest of the country was in chaos and Belgian paratroops were flown in. On 15th first UN troops arrived, on 28th UN chief Dag Hammarskjold arrived inLeopoldsville. On 3rd August Tshombe mobilised Katangan troops against the UN. On 8th Hammarskjold told the Belgian troops to leave Congo. |
