B.U.P./22./ Goebbels says: / "Axis maintaining civilisation" / Goebbels, Nazi Propaganda Minister, opened a German War Books Week at Weimar today - for many years the home of the poet Goethe, who is scorned by the Nazis for his advocacy of international co-operation. / And this is what Goebbels said, according to Berlin radio: / "The war which our troops are waging victoriously on all fronts means for us Germans more than a mere struggle for war, materials and lebensraum(living space) / It means the maintenance of Euro[pean c]ivil[isa]tion, which the Axis Powers have taken under the[ir pro]te[ctio]n." / --British United Press. / H. 12.10 P.M. 2. Goebbels admits paper shortage / Huge book output claimed / Sunday. / An admission that the paper shortage problem in Germany was very serious was made by Goebbels today in a speech at the opening of the week of "The German Book in Wartime", at Weimar, broadcast on the German wireless, says Reuter. / Each week of the war aggravated the shortage, he said. / Goebbels declared that the Germans were defending European culture and he claimed that Germany could point to 2,000 years of cultural achievements / He said that the demand for German classics had gone up considerably during the war. / He announced that 250 million books and other publications were published in the Reich during the second year of the war with an average of 11,000 copies. / Political and "documentary writings" totalled 56,500,000 including 33,000,000 new political pamphlets. / Works of nations friendly disposed towards Germany translated into German amounted to 641 during the year. / Goebbels added : "The Fuehrer is the representative of spiritual Germany and therefore the supreme defender of our cultural life, of which the book is the most pointed weapon." / Reuter /CHPEIL 2 / 1537

He gained support for his views on German nationalism, anti-Semitism, anti-capitalism and anti-communism through his impassioned speeches and propaganda. He wanted to establish a New Order of absolute rule in Europe and pursued a policy of seizing land by force for the Aryan people.
