NotesNov. 5: ... Middle East: ... Gen. Montgomery, addressing war correspondents at Eighth Army H.Q., said: "I can now tell you that it has been a fine battle and that it has resulted in complete and absolute victory. The Boche is completely finished. We drove wedges in his line, and I passed through three armoured divisions which are operating in the enemy's rear... After 12 days of very hard fighting, the Eighth Army and the Allied air forces have gained a complete victory over the German and Italian forces, The enemy is completely smashed. ... Thoma was reconnoitring in a forward position very near the front line. His tank was hit. He had to jump for it quick and he was promptly pounced upon and captured. ... I told Thoma that I came to the desert in August. In September I met Rommel. In October I beat him. It can seldom have happened that a general has the opportunity of discussing a battle with the opposing general whom he has captured. ... [Keesing's Contemporary Archives p.5441]
