NotesFO0339-436: Rookem-on-Sea - Flook and Rufus wander to the sea-side at Rookem, and seek work at the splendid guest-house. Here they (and the guests) are subjected to the landlady's (Mrs. Grub) calculated meanness, and an investigating Flook has to escape her vigilance as a smoke ring. They then discover Mrs. Honeybun's friendly "Seaview", whose trade Mrs. Grub is trying to destroy. Battle with the villainess is joined. After dangerous exchanges on an advertising balloon and an unfinished switch-back, the friends' beach teas are sabotaged by the Grub rain-making plane; but from the following snow they build an igloo for ice-cream sales. Flook's self-changes are a defence against physical attacks from Mrs. G., and as a tank he pursues her (riding on a donkey) into a talent contest. As her entry, Mrs. Grub tries to saw Flook in half, but his own magical turn succeeds in literally boiling her up. She nonetheless attempts, by foul means, to win the boarding-house contest to become Rookem's official land-lady; but by changing into a fire-engine Flook reascues the real Mrs. Grub from captivity, and exposes his opponent as in fact Moses Maggot (Mossy Mildew in the American edition) in disguise.
