NotesNews: Feb. 29. American troops today stormed ashore at Los Negros in the Admiralty Islands. This new assault on the Japanese position in the Pacific came as the climax of a month of Allied successes. The assault, codenamed "Operation Brewer" rushed troops towards the beaches in fast destroyers instead of the customary slow landing craft.... The Allied offensive has made good progress during the last few weeks. American bombers began by raiding Guam for the first time since the Japanese captured this US base shortly after the attack on Pearl Harbour.... Ten days ago US soldiers, sailors and marines successfully invaded Eniwetok Atoll in the Marshall Islands... [Chronicle of the 20th century]
