NotesNews: Dec. 2: One out of every ten men called up between the ages of 18 and 25 will now be ordered to work in the coal mines, instead of going into the forces. The scheme, announced by Ernest Bevin, the Minister of Labour, has been introduced on account of acute manpower shortage. Many young miners have eagerly volunteered for the forces to get away from the pits. the conscript miners - to be chosen by ballot - are already dubbed the Bevin Boys. This mixing of the classes in the coalfields should be good for democracy says the government. Miners' leaders are hostile but conscripts may still get a welcome in the valleys.
