NotesNews: January 21; ... North Africa: the Eighth Army advanced W. of Homs and reached El-Azziza, 25 miles S. of Tripoli, where Italian armoured rearguards were overcome. Feverish demolition work was observed in Tripoli, apparently as the prelude to enemy evacuation: Cairo and Radio-Maroc both reported that British troops had entered the city's suburbs. In extensive air operations the R.A.F. bombed Tripoli harbour, Castel Benito, enemy transport on the coastal road as far W. as Ben Gardane in Tunisia, shipping off the Tunisian coast, and targets in Sicily, shooting down 3 German bombers and 3 fighters for loss of 6 planes. Ahead of the main forces but well S. of the coastal road, British and Fighting French mobile columns were racing W. in an effort to cut off Afrikakorps columns making for Tunisia. ...
